Bath time/ Swim lessons

Alma had never really liked bath time. It seemed stressful to her as she concentrated on kicking her legs and not falling over. However, since we took her swimming the other week at a hotel swimming pool, her attitude in the bath tub has changed dramatically. She has started splashing like crazy ... as in all-the-water-splashed-out-of-the-tub type of crazy. It is awesome.

While I don't have a picture of it, she also started swim lessons last week.  She was easily the most excited of the ten babies at this first lesson, kicking and splashing the whole time. She didn't even mind going under the water. The other moms were like, "wow, she likes the water!"  Their babies were just holding on to them for dear life! Too funny. And I had fun too -- the other moms are super nice and the instructor was fantastic. Hooray for swim lessons!  (Plus, she was asleep in the car before I even pulled out of the parking spot. Cute!)

Friends

Alma and I have a few mommy-baby duo pals who we hang out with on a regular basis.  Here she is with Samantha's babe, Elias.  He is just a few weeks younger than Alma and such a cutie.

I'm lucky to have met Samantha in prenatal classes (and again in Mommy and Me yoga classes).  She has quickly become as a trusted friend, confidant and advisor.

Rolling Problems

Alma's rolling skills have started to cause some funny problems for her.  Now, when she rolls around in bed, she gets stuck with her face again the crib.  It is super cute and she enjoys licking the crib, but after awhile she gets so scrunched up next to the sides of the crib (in up dog) that she cannot figure out how to get out of that position.

Grass!

Alma loves grass. I'm thinking of enrolling her in a lawn care program. She's a hard worker!

Happy Father's Day

Like Mother's Day, we had a chill Father's Day.  Sure, breakfast in bed (Alma left the kitchen a mess!  Oh, kids these days, right?), a nice walk with the pup and good foods.
Joshua is such a great father -- very attentive and it is obvious that his whole world revolves around what is best for Alma.  In reflecting on what makes Joshua such a wonderful father, I think the words faith and creativity sum it up.  I can only hope that Alma learns from his example.
What a blessing Joshua is to our whole family.

Unhinged

When she falls asleep like this and -- no matter how many times I put her head back in place -- it just looks too painful.  She is getting marks on her face from the buckle ... the buckle that goes across her chest.  Now, that's just skill.

More Firsts

Alma was able to attend her first wedding this past weekend ... our wonderful neighbors Randy and Erin were wed in Old Greenwich, Connecticut in a beautiful backyard wedding.
Alma also enjoyed her first hotel stay and swim in a pool.
What a great weekend!

Article in Inquirer about CCOP's Efforts

Mayor Redd: Tear Down These Walls
By Kevin Riordan
Philadelphia Inquirer Columnist

Best part of the article:
Camden mayors are traditionally wary of CCOP, particularly because of its independence and media savvy. That has been the pattern for more than 20 years. It's time for Redd to break that mold.

Another Beautiful Quilt

My friend, Shawn, made Alma an amazingly beautiful quilt for her bedroom.  I'm tempted to "steal" it and hang it in the dining room!

Thanks, Shawn!!

[I'll post pictures of the quilt once we get our act together and hang it in her room.]

Comparison

Can you believe these photos were taken a month apart?  Crazy.
To go from this little 5-month old baby ...
... to this 6-month old child?
Wild.

Daddy, Wake Up!

Alma doesn't look happy about her father falling asleep (again!) during their morning play time.

[Really, I don't think she even noticed, but the photo catches a different emotion.]

Six Months

In the Ergo carrier at the park we visit daily
Alma's updates:
* Alma is a hard worker.  Infancy is tough work.  However ,we can see the progress of her work on a nearly daily basis. From recognizing faces of friends to sitting up to embarking on new tasks like solid foods, everything in her life is focused on the present task at hand.  She has become a good little teacher as we attempt to stay present instead of focusing on the next thing on our to-do list or agenda.  Taking the hour after she wakes up in the morning to watch her sit and play with her toys is one of the best ways to start a day full of intention.

Eeek!
* She often makes the above face as she shows concern for something.  Even though it is a very passing expression, we see it often.  I like to think of it as a little "eek!"
* Eating:  While they recommend waiting until six months to begun solid foods, I couldn't resist starting earlier because Alma was so interested. So far, she has had avocados, bananas and rice cereal.  She is okay with being in the high chair and wearing a bib, but when you bring a spoon of food near her mouth, she tightly closes her lips and flails her arms to catch the spoon.   So it becomes a game of gently holding her arms down, using a finger to pry her mouth open and quickly getting the food into her mouth.  Nothing too out of the ordinary for a new eater, but still quite the process.

* Teeth: She has a new tooth that is cutting through the gums as I write. While it cannot really be seen, when I put my finger in her mouth, it feels like a little chip of glass (sharp!).
* Sitting up: Alma can sit up but not for too long. Eventually she seems to lose her attention and falls over. Or, she sees the cat walking by, lunges to grab the cat's foot, misses and lands on her face. Crying ensues.
Champion car sleeper (as taken with my phone's camera using the reflection of the mirror we use to see her in the back seat)
* Blowing bubbles: Yup, she does this A LOT.  Joshua and Alma are already teaming up on me and spending what feels like an eternity happily sitting close to me blowing bubbles (a.k.a spitting on me).
* Senses: Alma is very sensitive to light and will use stuffed animals and any available material to cover her eyes when she is tired.  She also has great hearing and will quickly spin around to see what is going on if a noise is behind her.

We were reading books together, I got up for a glass of water, she covered her eyes with a stuffed animal, and she was asleep for the next hour
* Habits/joys: Grabbing (and trying to remove) her ears, especially when tired; watching dogs do anything; smiling at people; riding in the Ergo baby carrier around the neighborhood; eating her feet; being the cutest baby ever.
Chilling with her best friend
* Lastly, and this seems to be part of her personality, she is gentle.  When discovering a new texture or fabric, she very lightly flicks it with her fingers.  Also, when I hold her, she often wraps her arm around my neck and gently pets the loose hair from my ponytail.  Unfortunately, Joshua does not receive such a gentle touch when it comes to his chest hair.
Eating her feet while sitting on Daddy's chest
As someone shared with us recently about raising children, the days go slowly but the years move quickly.  We are definitely feeling that.  The days are luxuriously long -- especially since we are outside in this nice weather so much-- but this six months has flown by us.

Happy half birthday, sweet little Alma!

Science!

Alma recently volunteered for a study with Temple University's Developmental Science Lab. They hooked her up to a heart-rate monitor and something to track how often she blinked. Then she watched a video of herself -- either a live feed (basically a mirror) or with a time delay. The researchers were seeing if she responded with more excitement if she saw a mirror (live feed) or if she felt like she was causing an action to occur (the time delay).  They are testing both 3- and 5-months to compare their preferences.  I'm interested to hear the results.

Hooray for science!

Baby Yoga

Alma and I are still attending our weekly baby yoga class.  It has become much more interesting since she became interested in other babies.  Here she is with her buddy, Simone.  In class, they alternate between grabbing for each other and watching the mamas practice yoga.  It is so wonderful to have this weekly ritual.

Happy Memorial Day!

We had a great long weekend.  From our day at Marsh Creek Lake State Park with Nana and Grandpa to the bbq at Cousin Peter and Janice's house.  Look how cute those kids are!
